- VRIES, Adriaen de
- Adriaen de Vries was one of the leading Late Mannerist sculptors whose career well exemplifies the internationalism of the period: he was born in The Hague, trained in Italy, and worked mainly in Prague. He was trained as a bronzeworker under Giovanni Bologna (a Fleming in spite of his name) and, from 1593, he worked for the Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, but he also made two Fountains in Augsburg (Mercury, completed 1599, and Hercules, 1602) and works for Buckeburg and Stadthagen.
There are also examples in Edinburgh, London (NG, V&A), Paris (Louvre), Stockholm and Vienna.
