Proudly sporting the influence of Jim Jarmusch on his sleeve, Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki broke out of the art house ghetto and achieved cult status with this scattershot road movie. With their dead bassist travelling in his coffin and their Cadillac brimful of beer cans, the Leningrad Cowboys (whose hairstyles are more pointed than their winklepickers) fulfil their reputation as the world's worst rock band, as they lurch between disastrous Stateside gigs before finally landing in Mexico. Yet, this isn't a Spinal Tap-type of picture, as it isn't the Cowboys that are under the microscope, but the deliriously ordinary folk they meet en route.

  • One of the Cowboys, Mauri Sumén (b.1965), has also carved out a career as a Film & TV soundtrack composer. Films include the risible Baltic Storm (2003) (and his soundtrack is all over the place).

  • By the time of the sequel Leningrad Cowboys Meet Moses four years later, over half of the original band had left the group. The band for this movie in full and who left the band after the movie were:

Sakke Järvenpää, Heikki Keskinen (left), Pimme Korhonen (left), Sakari Kuosmanen (left), Puka Oinonen (left), Silu Seppälä, Mauri Sumén, Mato Valtonen, Pekka Virtanen (left).

  • One of the founder members of the band, Mato Valtonen (b.1955), left the band in the late 1990s to pursue a career in business and as a Finnish TV presenter.

  • The lost cousin in the film, Nicky Tesco, was the lead singer of the late 70s British new wave band The Members. The band played a reunion gig at The Inn On The Green, Ladbroke Grove, London on 26th January 2007.

  • Matti Pellonpää, who played Vladimir (Manager), was probaly the most famous Finnish actor of his generation. He died six years later of a heart attack in Vaasa, Finland, at the age of 45.

  • When it was originally released, it's biggest success was in Germany (Source: Pravda)

  • In a bar in Sodankyla, Sakke Jarvenpaa and Mato Valtonen decided to make a rock movie better than the Blues Brothers. They drew the hairstyle on a piece of paper and showed Aki. He suggested the shoes should be the same size as the hair (Source: Pravda)

  • Sakke thought of the name Leningrad Cowboys in a bathtub in a hotel room (Source: Pravda)
