So Influential It Wasn't Actually Him in the Ladykillers!

It's staggering! The amount of people I have asked who remembered Alastair Sim and then said: "I loved him in The Ladykillers" seems to me to point to the fact that to many people it is only Alastair Sim that could have played the role.

Of course, it was another great British actor, Alec Guinness who played the part but only after he was so impressed with Sim's performance in London Belongs to Me (1948) that he based his performance on it some seven years later. And if Sim so impressed Guinness then there can be no greater compliment!

He was the son of Alexander Sim JP and Isabella McIntyre, born on the 9th October 1900 in Edinburgh, Scotland and educated in the city.

In all, he appeared in 61 films and 46 West End productions.

He was married to Naomi Plaskitt from 1932 until his death from cancer on the 19th August 1976 in London. They had one daughter, Merlith McKendrick.

In the late 40s/early 50s he was probaly the most popular British actor.

Away from acting, he always had an interest in language (especially the spoken word) and became the Fulton Lecturer in Elocution at New College, Edinburgh University from 1925 until 1930. In 1948, he was invited back and became the Rector of Edinburgh University for three years.

A very private man, he never signed autographs and turned down a knighthood.

My favourie Sim movie? That's an incredibly hard one, with so many roles to choose from. He was one of those actors (and there are only a handful) who are worth watching in every movie he made. But if pushed it would have to be An Inspector Calls.

Alastair Sim was an enigmatic character both on and off the screen. His idiosyncratic style of acting in films such as Scrooge, The Belles of St Trinian's and many more, endeared him to a cinema-going audience desperate to escape the day-to-day dreariness of an invasive, bureaucratic post-war Britain. In private, he was a curiously contradictory character, prejudiced and yet tolerant, thoughtful but sometimes inconsiderate. Alastair's life outside of films primarily concerned his marriage to Naomi Sim (whom he first met when she was twelve), his career as an elocution teacher, his extensive work on stage (including his theatrical endeavours with James Bridie), his championship of youth and his stalwart refusal to sign autographs.
