      A TRAGEDIE

In 1978, the BBC set itself the task of filming all of William Shakespeare’s plays for television. The resulting productions, renowned for their loyalty to the text, utilised the best theatrical and television directors and brought great performances from leading contemporary actors.

"Age cannot wither her, nor custome stale
      Her infinite variety; other women
Cloy the appetites they feed, but she makes hungry
      Where most she satisfies"

Mark Antony, one of three rulers of the Roman Empire, commands the eastern Mediterranean. Despite his infatuation with Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, he has to return to Rome. As his fellow ruler Octavius schemes, Mark Antony rejoins Cleopatra and driven by blind passion, they confront the mighty empire.

Themes of ambition, power, love, friendship and deception – laced with a fascinating portrait of self-destructive passion – fuel Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy. In this production Jane Lapotaire is gripping in the sensual role of Cleopatra, while Colin Blakely takes the part of love-tortured Mark Antony.

      -------------------------

      . . . Enter Demetrius and Philo . . .

PHILO: ”Nay, but this dotage of our General’s
O’erflows the measure. Those goodly eyes,
That o’er the files and musters of war
Have glowed like plated Mars, now bend, now turn
The office and devotion of their view
Upon a tawny front. His captain’s heart,
Which in the scuffles of great fights hath burst
The buckles on his breast, reneges all temper,
And is become the bellows and the fan
      To cool a gypsy’s lust.”

      COLIN BLAKELY   JANE LAPOTAIRE

PRODUCED and DIRECTED BY JONATHAN MILLER

      The Historie and Tragedy Of
      ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA

      shakespeare collection

      ABOUT ANTONY & CLEOPATRA

A compelling account of the turbulent and ill-fated affair between history’s most famous lovers is magnificently acted out by the cast . . . First printed in the 1623 Folio, the play had been entered on the Stationers’ Register on 20th May 1608, it has been suggested that Shakespeare wrote his version no later than 1606 and stylistic evidence supports – Based upon Sir Thomas North’s translation of Plutarch’s Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romans (1579) from which much of the descriptive prose is a direct lift . . . The unconventional casting and the 16th century costumes add a new dimension and intensity . . .

    • Antony and Cleopatra

Two of history’s most famous lovers are caught between their consummate love for one another and the struggles for power among the rulers of the Roman world.

Mark Antony, Octavius Caesar and Marcus Aemilius Lepidus are the principals of the triumvirate that rule the Roman World. Their equilibrium and the united strength of their power-sharing is undermined however as Mark Antony neglects his duties as a Roman Ruler to fulfil his love for Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt.

In a quest for sole power with Cleopatra as the prize, Caesar wages battle against Mark Antony, and so one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies concludes. Upon hearing a false report of Cleopatra’s death Antony falls on his sword. Cleopatra chooses to die from the bite of an asp rather than befall the fate of returning to Rome as Caesar’s prize.
