Auguste Rodin (1840 - 1917) ~ Notes

For a long time the life of the sculptor Rodin was marked by the mixed reactions his work provoked with the audience. The lack of understanding for Rodin’s work was partly due to the original character of his art. He felt little for the strict formats of Romanticism and neither did he want to identify himself with the neutrality of the Impressionists.

Rodin’s work is characterised by a passion for the human body and he considered himself incapable of any creativity if he did not have a living model in front of him. ‘In everything I follow nature and I never pretend I am able to control her. My only ambition is to be subservient and faithful to her, he said.

About Parastone

First things first: there are no better Rodin sculptures/figures than these Parastone figures anywhere. The attention to detail & the 3d effect breathes new life in the work of the masters.

Parastone was originally part of the famous Borzo art dealership which was founded in 1880 and it primarily specialised in restoring religious art. When, alongside the latter activity, an increasing number of sculptures were produced after own designs, it was decided – in 1963 – to found Parastone as an independent company.

For over 50 years now, Parastone has successfully designed decorative sculptures, partly of timeless classic beauty, partly aligned with current trends. The museum images entitled Mouseion constitute an important part of the collection. Alongside exact copies of important works of art, Mouseion also consists of three-dimensional interpretations of paintings and sketches by many artists ranging from Jheronimus Bosch to Salvador Dali.

Parastone is located in ’s-Hertogenbosch, a historic city in the Netherlands and the birthplace of famous Medieval painter Jheronimus Bosch.

Rodin and Parastone: what a magical combination.

Sculpture of the famous sculpture The Kiss, a work originally completed in 1886. In between Romanticism and Impressionism this self-willed Frenchman created some of the most famous pieces known in the art of sculpting.

Like The Thinker, The Kiss is also taken from The Gates of Hell, Rodin’s opus magnus. Originally it was based on the figures Paolo and Frensesca from Dante’s Inferno, who were convicted to Hell for eternity because they kissed each other after Francesca had married Paolo’s brother. Sensual but also radiating a certain and unconstrained love. In 1893, The Kiss was submitted to the World Coumbian Fair in Chicago, but the American authorities found the sculpture too provocative for public exhibition. It was erected in a private room to which there was only access by ‘special permission’. Perhaps due to the secret atmosphere, the exhibition was a great success and to this day The Kiss has remained one of the most popular of Rodin’s works.

As of 2014, I found that amazon now stock the Rodin Parastone sculptures. As it is impossible to compete with their buying power you may well find the sculpture cheaper there. I have put links to their US site below which will take you to their Rodin sculpture pages.

If I can ever compete with their prices then I will stock them again as I do love these sculptures and they deserve to be owned by as many people as possible. Sculpture of the very famous sculpture The Thinker completed in 1880.

Rodin never wanted to say anything about what his Thinker was thinking, but rather how he was thinking. ‘My Thinker not only thinks with his brain, his frowned forehead, his wide open nostrils and tight lips ; but with every muscle in his arms back and legs, with his clenched fists and bent toes.’ The Thinker one of the most famous works by Rodin, and was originally part of The Gates Of Hell. Sitting in the Tympan, he oversees Hell, the judge over the people below him, he too is locked up! The Thinker was the first sculpture by Rodin to be publicly exhibited. It was erected in front of the Pantheon during an intense political and social crisis in France on the 21st April 1906. Later is was transported to the Hotel Biron, the former studios of the artist and the present Rodin Museum.

Portrait of partner Rose Beuret, 21 years old.

Rose went as a countrygirl to Paris to start work as seamstress in one of the many workshops. It was there where she met Rodin and, in his own words, ‘clasped to him like an animal’. Two years later she gave birth to a son, who was never acknowledged by the father. She remained his partner for over 50 years and only married him in 1917, a few days before she died. Rose was a lifelong stable factor in the background for Rodin. She was not a part of his social life though and had to put up with a lot. She regularly sat as a model, among others for the Bachante. The subtle portrait becomes even more fascinating, especially when you keep in mind the later role she played in Rodin’s life.

1885. Sculpture of the mythological figure Danaide, one of the daughters of King Danaos. Her streamline curves and sensuous posture entice and arouse. According to Greek mythology, the Danaides were the fifty daughters of King Danaos of Argos, who was in conflict with his brother Aegyptos, father of fifty sons. The fifty sons went to Argos to propose marriage to the Danaides as a conciliatory gesture towards Danaos. Danaos resented his brother and ordered his daughters to murder their bridegrooms on their wedding night. They proceeded, except all but one. As a result of their crimes, the Danaides were sentenced to the underworld where their unending penance was to fill pierced jugs.

(1885). Greek mythology tells about Danaïde and her forty-nine sisters who married the fifty sons of Aegyptus. Their father, King Danaos, who is in conflict with Aegyptus, orders his daughters to kill their husbands during their wedding night. Their punishment for their horrendous crime was to spend the rest of their lives in the underworld, filling vessels with water which could never be filled. This story gave Rodin the opportunity to visualise the total exhaustion of the female body. The marble stresses the fluent curves and reflects the aesheticism of Art Nouveau.

This sensual Venus figure is based on the kneeling feminine faun in the Tympan from The Gates of Hell, a bronze portal meant for the Nusee des Arts Décoratifs, which was never finished. The faun is part of the complex composition of charming nudes to both sides of the famous The Thinker, at the top of The Gates of Hell. With firm and authentic spheres, Rodin created a playful distinction between shadow and light, rendering a strong, yet vulnerable, woman – intangible for mankind, but not for the artist Rodin. In 1891 Emile Zola commissioned Rodin, on behalf of the Societé des Gens de letters, to design a statue of the novelist Honoré de Balzac who had died in 1850. There was little material at hand to base his portrait on – only a couple of sketches, one photo and measurements on his stature which had been retrieved from his tailor. The statue was far from finished on the date agreed upon, but the Société’s committee found the enormous straddle-legged, naked figure wit hits fat stomach utterly appalling. The dressed version which was displayed ten months later was described by the patrons as an artistically unsatisfactory, shapeless mass. However, Rodin displayed the design, together with The Kiss, in the Salon. The media found it a disgrace and the statue became the main issue in a fierce political battle against the background of the Dreyfuss-affair. The sculptor, who had no particular interest in politics, returned the assignment and placed the statue, to which he had a personal bond, at the Villa des Brillants, where he lived at the time. He predicted that it would find its own way and said that this subject of mockery was the result of his entire life. (1898)

Like The Thinker and many other well-known sculptures, the Crouching Woman is based on a figure from the tympanum of the Gates of Hell, a bronze portal meant for the Musee des Arts Decoratifs which Auguste Rodin never finished. There The Crouching Woman represents -- with her caryatid-like pose, powerful and vulnerable at the same time -- one of the lost souls being judged in the Last Judgment. This reproduction is a detailed reproduction of this character from Rodin's famous sculpture, rich with the colorations and hand sculpted texture after the original.

The theme of motherly love does not occur often in Auguste Rodin's work, except for a period around 1885. Apparently, this theme then played a big part in his life. This touching sculpture of a nude mother seated on a rock being gently nuzzled by her young child is a beautiful and eternal statement about motherhood. She calmly reflects on the spiritual connection between herself and her son or daughter.

The Young Mother composition can also be distinguished in relief on the side panel of the Gates of Hell, a bronze portal meant for the Musee des Arts Decoratifs which was never finished. A bronze copy was offered by the artist to be auctioned as a contribution towards the costs of the monument in honor of Claude Lorrain, a 17th century-painter whom Rodin greatly admired.

This work’s title says it all: female beauty constituted Rodin’s principal source of inspiration. As far as subject and composition are concerned, he seems to have been influenced by the sculpture ‘Sakountala’ that Camille Claudel had modelled some years earlier. The writer Rainer Maria Rilke wrote the following about The Eternal Idol : « Always the same… enchanting strength… You dare not assign a single meaning to it (as is so often the case with Rodin). It has thousands of meanings ».

(1884). This expressive sculpture of two lovers is almost Baroque in style. It rapidly became one of Rodin’s most popular works. Multiple bronze and marble versions were created. Rodin probably designed the image for his famous Gates of Hell which explains the frontal composition. The lovers exude the joy Rodin experienced during the first years of his relationship with Camille Claudel as does the renowned sculpture ‘The Kiss’. At that time, he discovered, as he put it, how much the combination of physical attraction and mental compatibility could mean to a man.

Rodin was fascinated by the expressiveness and symbolism of hands. In his famous sculpture ‘The Cathedral’ for example, the hands mirror majestic Gothic architecture. These two graceful hands are a study for ‘The Secret’, a marble sculpture in which two right hands clutch an abstract, rectangular ‘secret’. (1906-1909).

The Age of BronzeRodin’s first life-sized sculpture – was first exhibited in Belgium where he created it. It was so perfect that the critics immediately accused the relatively unknown artist of having used life casts. Striving for the perfect representation of the human body was perhaps a consequence of the fact that Rodin modelled the work right after returning from a trip to Florence where he had admired the masters of Renaissance sculpture.

(1881). In 1880, Rodin was commissioned to design the main doors for the new museum of the Decorative Arts. It was agreed that the bronze doors would feature bas reliefs based on Dante’s Divine Comedy. These Gates of Hell would be flanked by two life-sized figures: Adam and Eve. Rodin created multiple studies for Eve, but none of these were used to accompany the gates. The model on which the sculpture was based was the Italian Madame Abruzzezzi. She proved to be pregnant when she posed and when this became visible Rodin was furious. From then on he banned his assistants from having intimate relations with the models at his studio.

As Rodin grew older, his work became increasingly sketch-like and abstract. Dance was an important source of inspiration to him. He tried to capture the essence of the movements and was not at all interested in anatomical detail. In contrast to Degas, Rodin did not like classical ballet. He preferred the spontaneous, natural movements of what were, at the time, modern forms of dance. When the famous dancer Isadora Duncan opened a school for modern dance near his studio, Rodin made the most of the opportunity by sketching the movements of the school’s pupils for days on end. The series, Mouvements de danse was probably based on Alda Moreno, a dancer for the Opéra Comique.

I also miss those conversations with fellow Parastone admirers who are adding a sculpture or starting a collection. For now it's enough to present them as beautifully as I possibly can or am able to do.
