At 19, Bernard Dunstan attended Byam Shaw School of Art and then the Slade School of Fine Art, London.
After the 2nd World War, he taught at various arts schools including the West of England School of Art, Bristol, Camberwell School of Art, Byam Shaw School of Art, Ravensbourne Art College, and Guilds of London Art School.
From the early 1950s, Dunstan has exhibited regularly and annually exhibits at the famous
the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
In 1968, he was elected Royal Academician. Books on painting that he has had published include Learning to Paint in 1970.
He is married to the painter Diana Armfield RA. The couple live and works in Kew, Surrey.
