THE IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM COLLECTION features rare and fascinating original films preserved in the Museum's vaults. Many have never been released to the public before and are presented here, complete and uncut, for the very first time. These films are of great historical importance and are essential viewing for anyone interested in British naval and military history.

Made for the Admiralty in 1943, ADVANCED BASE provides exceptionally detailed coverage of the creation of a new port during wartime. When key naval operations extended beyond the reach of permanent naval bases such as Gibraltar and Alexandria, the navy required the rapid establishment of 'Advanced Bases' where warships could rest, refuel and refit.

Although both the RAF and the fleet played a role in the formation of such bases, the task of seizing, equipping and defending the new port fell largely to the Royal Marines.

The first part of this film provides a detailed account of the many and varied roles Royal Marine detachments would be required to perform, while the second provides a dramatised film account of the establishing of a typical Advanced Base at 'Port X'. The activities of the Royal Marines are shown in considerable detail, from engineering and signals through to manning the huge coastal batteries and antiaircraft defences. The film culminates with a simulated attack on the Advanced Base by combined German naval and air forces.

During World War One, a hard drinking river trader (BOGART) and a prim missionary (HEPBURN) are forced to take a hazardous river expedition together, encountering tropical hazards, nefarious German officers and a surprising romance.

Bogart's role won him his only Oscar. Hepburn puts in a characteristically sharp performance. With masterful direction from John Huston and a wonderful script from the classic C. S. Forester novel, The African Queen is a rare treat.

In any country's army the paratrooper is the elite - tough, hand-picked, highly trained and a formidable fighter. They arrive as shock troops, usually outnumbered and relying on skill and raw guts to win through.

Using extensive rare combat footage, dramatic re-constructions and exclusive interviews, AIRBORNE! is a detailed and dramatic account of the world's elite airborne units in action - their history, tactics and weaponry.

Although small scale paratrooper attacks were attempted during the Great War, it was during World War Two that airborne forces first proved what they were really capable of. Elite German units took part in the invasion of Norway and the Blitzkrieg, often winning against overwhelming odds. They inspired Churchill to establish a British paratrooper force - and Allied airborne forces were to play an increasingly important role, especially during the liberation of Europe.

At war's end, airborne units were thought obsolete, but they soon proved their worth in conflicts the world over. British paratroopers fought in Palestine, Egypt, Aden, Cyprus, the Falklands and the Gulf. Elite French airborne units fought in Indo-China and Zaire, while America pioneered new helicopter-borne assault tactics in Vietnam.

Today, wherever war breaks out, it will be airborne forces who spearhead any assault. They remain the warrior elite.

This film is a truly objective history of the Algerian War, a momentous struggle for independence from France by the Algerian people between 1954 and 1962. Unique historical footage has been gathered from both sides - the cameras were free to roam in both countries, and many of the interviewees speak frankly for the first time of their role in the struggle.

This was an eight year conflict that caused the fall of six French Prime Ministers and the collapse of the 4th Republic. It returned de Gaulle to power, but almost saw his demise. Brutal and horrific, it resulted in the deaths of at least a million Moslem Algerians and the ejection from their homes of an equal number of European settlers. Pitiless terror, monstrous cruelty, flagrant torture, indiscriminate violence was countenanced by both sides. But it was also a heroic and tragic affair: the last and most significant of the old style colonial wars.

The prize was a country 10 times the size of Britain, 300 miles wide and stretching 1300 miles from the blue Mediterranean to the harsh desert, forbidding in many ways, but rich in oil and gas and people.

      ALGERIAN WAR CHAPTERS INCLUDE:

Part 1: ROAD TO REBELLION traces how France became involved in Algeria, the rise of nationalism there, and the critical early months of the uprising in 1954 and 1955

Part 2: A QUESTION OF CONSCIENCE continues through the so-called Battle of Algiers of 1956 and 1957 to the eve of the collapse of the 4th Republic in France in early 1958 and considers the issue of torture with many of the torturers and tortured speaking frankly of their experiences for the first time.

Part 3: I UNDERSTAND YOU details De Gaulle's return to power during the extraordinary events of May 1958, together with his victories during 1959 that brought the Algerian rebellion to near collapse.

Part 4: TO THE BARRICADES pinpoints the increasing disillusionment among European settlers and French Army officers in Algeria with De Gaulle' s policies that found expression in rebellion, fierce rioting and founding in 1961 of the secret anti-government organisation OAS

Part 5: THE SUITCASE OR THE COFFIN chronicles the bloody climax of the Algerian independence struggle, in particular the negotiations that led to the ceasefire of March 1962, the eventual sell-rule for Moslem Algerians and the mass exodus of the European settlers from Algeria.

David Jason, Maggie Smith, William Ash, Stuart Bunce, Emma Cunniffe, David Troughton, Ed Waters, Phyllis Logan, Ian McDiarmid & Sonya Walger Julian Jarrold 'Matter Of Fact' - a documentary looking at the true story behind 'All The King's Men', presented by HRH The Prince Of Wales

As the Sandringham Company advanced onto the battlefield, a strange mist was seen to descend and engulf - almost as though God was wrapping them up and taking them from the terror that awaited... It was the last that was ever seen of the Sandringham Company and the mystery of its disappearance survives to this day.

An all-star cast portrays this most poignant and mysterious event of the First World War - the disappearance in action of the Sandringham Company at Gallipoli in 1915. Commanded by the Estate Manager, Captain Frank Beck (David Jason), they were just ordinary men - servants, grooms and gardeners - drawn from the staff of the King's private residence. They left an idyllic rural existence for the fatally ill-prepared campaign and their deaths brought the horrors of the First World War to the heart of the establishment - and the Royal Family itself. After the war a Special Envoy was sent at the behest of Queen Alexandra (Maggie Smith) to discover what fate had befallen the Company. But the truth was never fully revealed...

They were the warrior elite - the most skilled, fierce and feared men of their times - carving out their place in history through brutal, close quarter combat on blood-drenched battlefields around the world.

They fought in times when you lived or died by the strength of your sword arm, or your skill with a bow or spear. Some relied on discipline and tactics; others on wild courage and ferocity. Some adhered to their own codes of honour; others were pure killers who revelled in the murderous destruction they wrought with fire, axe and mace.

They fought. They died. And they shaped the history of the world.

Ancient Warriors: The Complete Series One features all thirteen episodes from the First Series of the action-packed Discovery Channel production.

Each episode focuses on a different group of ancient warriors, examining their training methods, weaponry and battle tactics through the use of authentic combat re-enactments, original period artefacts, expert commentary and computer-generated battlefield recreations:

Amongst the very best of the Battle of Britain war epics and one informed by director George More O'Ferrall's own WWII experience at Fighter Command HQ, Angels One Five offers a slice-of-life depiction of aerial combat.

The title refers to the cognomen bestowed upon a group of British fighter pilots whose squadron leader, Tiger Small (Jack Hawkins) is taken out of commission after an accident. Despite the protests from his fellow flyboys, Tiger insists upon taking to the air again, thereby setting the stage for the film's exciting and inspirational finale.

The tense, nervous atmosphere is expertly created by the device of having most of the action take place off-screen with the progress of the principal characters relayed via radio reports and control-room charts.

Destruction of the Kurtz compound with commentary by Francis Ford Coppola. Excerpts from the original theatrical programme. Theatrical trailer. Scene selection. Interactive menus.

Based on Joseph Conrad's immortal novel, Heart of Darkness, this film explores in fascinating depth the sensuousness, the insanity and the moral dilemma that was the Vietnam War.

Captain Willard is an American Special Forces Officer who is sent on a delicate secret mission to kill another American, the renegade Colonel Kurtz. Kurtz has set himself up as a God among the natives and surrounded his jungle fortress with montagnard warriors, a particularly violent mountain tribe.

Willard's journey up the river brings him face to face with madness. There is an unforgettable meeting with the bloodthirsty Lt. Colonel Kilgore, who is heard to exclaim, 'I love the smell of napalm in the morning!'. There is a U.S.O. show which is a nightmare of surrealism and erotic impulses run wild. And then, at last, there is a terrifying encounter with Kurtz himself, the apotheosis of all that is evil in the heart of man...movie review

This special 2 DVD set takes you inside the development of one of the most devastating and powerful instruments of 20th Century warfare, the Tank. Modern tanks saw limited action during WWI, but at the onset of WWII, armored warfare doctrine was redefined by the German Blitzkrieg, demonstrating the devastatingly effective use of tanks in combat. Armored vehicles and doctrine evolved during the war and much of the Allies' success in WWII can be traced to their development of superior armor and armored tactics. The United States Army, in its quest to be the best, created an ideal balance between mobility, protection and firepower that has made America's armored forces the fastest, best equipped and most lethal in the world. In this documentary, we explore the history an devolution of this extraordinary war machine, including bonus interviews with WWII tank soldiers in Europe and the Pacific and a special biography of General George S. Patton.

SEPTEMBER 1944. The Battle of Arnhem was one of the most audacious but ultimately controversial battles of the Second World War. Airborne drops in Holland were to secure important bridges on the route to be taken by ground forces racing to gain a foothold across the Rhine. Had it succeeded it might have ended the war by Christmas 1944.

Arnhem: A Bridge Too Far - The True Story follows the route of the 3 airborne divisions - British 1st, US 101st and 82nd - and presents new insights into the operation called Market Garden. It also follows the 2nd Army in their drive up a single, narrow road to relieve the beleaguered British airborne forces in Arnhem.

Arnhem expert, Brigadier Frank Steer MBE, provides a completely new and unique tour of the battlefield and the drama that unfolded in the epic days of the battle.

The programme is illustrated with the pick of British, German and American archive film, much of it rarely seen, and talks to the veterans who took part in the epic battle of Arnhem - the largest airborne operation in history.
