Painter
Frank Auerbach Born in Berlin, he
moved permanently to Britain in 1939. Auerbach
studied at St Martin's School of Art, London,
and at the Royal College of Art. He was taught
and influenced by Bomberg
who encouraged
him to look back, beyond Cubism, to Cezanne.
His work is modern, but in the tradition of
Gericault, Delacroix, Ingres, Courbet and
Daumier; he is one of the most accomplished
figurative artists of his generation. His subjects
are portraits of friends, and landscapes.
