      A HISTORIE

In 1978, the BBC set itself the task of filming all of William Shakespeare’s plays for television. The resulting productions, renowned for their loyalty to the text, utilised the best theatrical and television directors and brought great performances from leading contemporary actors.

“Had I but served my God with half the zeal
I served my king; he would not in mine age
Have left me naked to mine enemies.”

Henry is a powerful monarch who flies in the face of the church in seeking to divorce Queen Katherine and marry Anne Boleyn. As Cardinal Wolsey , the powerful Lord Chancellor of England, attempts to bend Rome to the king’s wishes, the court reverberates with political intrigue and accusations of treachery.

The verbal jousting of Timothy West and Claire Bloom (as Cardinal Wolsey and Katherine of Aragon) illuminates this rare production of the near-full text of one of Shakespeare’s last plays. Shot entirely on location in English castles and stately homes, it was cited by the Shakespeare Association of America as the best of the BBC series . . .

      ABOUT HENRY VIII

On 29th Day of June 1613 the firing of cannon at the Globe Theatre ignited its thatch and it burned to the ground. According to a letter of 4th Day of July the house was full of spectators who had come to see ‘a new play called All Is True, which had been acted not passing two or three times before. Establishing the plays date with unusual accuracy, but when it came to be printed in the 1623 Folio it was entitled The Famous History of the Life of King Henry the Eight . . . It has been suggested the Shakespeare collaborated with John Fletcher (1579-1625) and certain aspects of writing style and language support this notion.
