Highgate Cemetery
An in-depth photo collection of the Western Cemetery, Highgate Cemetery, which is the Victorian City of the Dead.
Pictures are from the Western Cemetery only. Karl Marx is buried in the far less interesting Eastern Cemetery across the road in Swain's Lane.
Opened in 1839 it is wonderfully unkempt, neglected and as such more atmospheric than anywhere I know. The rich Victorians are buried here (many now half-forgotten) and built monuments to their importance, though nature ever since has done its best to claim the land back. Branches wrap their way through the crumbling monuments; gaping holes are found in many a tomb ... room enough for ghosts to break out and roam at will.
Photographs include: Circle of Lebanon, Entrance to the Egyptian Avenue, Wombwell monument, the famous bare-fisted fighter, Thomas Sayers's (1826-1865) grave with faithful dog, numerous monuments and catacombs.
