- BRUEGEL, Jan I
- Jan Bruegel, called Velvet Bruegel, was the younger son of Pieter I and brother of Pieter II. Like his father, he visited Italy. He was in Naples in 1590, met Bril in Rome in 1591, and worked for Cardinal Borromeo in Milan in the 1590s before returning to Antwerp in 1596. He was Court Painter to the Regents Albert and Isabella and was a successful painter of landscape and still-life on a highly detailed style which was much admired by his contemporaries. Rubens collaborated with him and painted a portrait of him and his family (London, Courtauld Inst.).
There are pictures in London (NG, Wellington Mus.), Madrid, New York (Met. Mus.), Oxford and manyother museums.
His son, Jan II (1601-78), was also a painter.
