      John Hoyland lives and works in London. His work is in over 30 major public collections around the world including the Tate Gallery, London and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

      He exhibited at the Waddington Galleries, London throughout the 1970s and 1980s. His work has been in numerous international group exhibitions from 1964 onwards.

      • 1965-69: Principal Lecturer at Chelsea School of Art

      • 1967: Solo exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery, London

      • 1972: Made Charles A Dana Professor of Fine Art at Colgate University, Hamilton, New York

      • 1974-77: Teaches at St Martin’s School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools

      • 1974-89: Teaches at the Slade School of Fine Art

      • 1978: Artist in residence at the Studio School, New York

      • 1979: Retrospective at the Serpentine Gallery, London. Receives an Arts Council purchase award. Artist in residence at Melbourne University

      • 1982: First Prize at the John Moore’s Liverpool Exhibition

      • 1983: Elected ARA

      • 1986: Joint first prize in the Korn Ferry International

      • 1987: Athena Art Award first prize

      • 1990: Solo exhibitions at Austin / Desmond Fine Art, London and Waddington Galleries, London

      • 1991: Elected RA. Solo exhibition at Eva Cohon Gallery, Chicago, USA

      • 1992: Solo exhibitions at Galerie Josine Bokhoven, Amsterdam, Holland and the Graham Modern Gallery, New York

      • 1994: Solo exhibitions at Annendale Gallery, Sydney, Australia and the CCA Gallery, London

      • 1995: Solo exhibition at Theo Waddington, London

      • 1996: Solo exhibition at the Carlow Arts Festival, Ireland

      • 1998: Wins the Wollaston Award for the most distinguished work in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition

      • 1999: Made Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy Schools. Solo exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts

      • 2001: Receives an Honorary Doctorate from Sheffield Hallam University. Solo exhibition at Beaux Arts, London
