Born into a family of show folk, she was a chorus girl at age 13, a music-hall performer at 16, and a motion-picture actress at 18 (beginning with 1944's Fiddlers Three). She alternated film roles with stage work (her early screen credits include 1944's Champagne Charlie 1946's London Town 1950's Dance Hall 1951's Happy Go Lovely and 1952's Curtain Up making her first real impression as one of the competitive roadster racers in the hit British comedy Genevieve (1953). |
