A COMEDIE
In 1978, the BBC set itself the task of filming all of William Shakespeare’s plays for television.
The resulting productions, renowned for their loyalty to the text, utilised the best theatrical
and television directors and brought great performances from leading contemporary actors.
“Let us once lose our oaths to find ourselves,
Or else we lose ourselves to keep out oaths.”
When the King of Navarre and three of his lords vow
to renounce women and devote themselves to study, they have forgotten the
forthcoming arrival of the Princess of France and her attractive ladies-in-waiting . . .
This production of Shakespeare’s comedy highlights his satire of intellectual pride and pedantry.
Wit and word-play are the weapons in the play’s sparkling conflicts and this cast perform
magnificently in capturing the perfect tone for Shakespeare’s playful and elaborate poetry.
"Let fame that all hunt after in their lives,
Live registered upon our brazen tombs . . ."

LOVE’S
LABOUR’S LOST
ABOUT LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST
The 1598 edition of Love’s Labour’s Lost is the first play text to
carry Shakespeare’s name on the title page, which also refers to performance before the Queen ‘this last Christmas’.
The setting is Navarre – a kingdom straddling the border between Spain and France –
where the young King and three of his friends vow to
devote the following three years to austere self-improvement, forgoing the
company of woman. But they have forgotten the imminent arrival on a diplomatic
mission of the Princess of France with, as it happens, three of her ladies; . . . Shakespeare
counterpoints the main action with contemporary events and he drew heavily upon the disciplines
of the renowned ‘Commedia dell’arte’ which was popular in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
