    • ESCHER, Maurits Cornelis
      1898-1972

      Artist

      • Born: 17 June 1898
      • Birthplace: Leeuwarden, Netherlands
      • Died: 27 March 1972
      • Best Known As: Mind-bending artist of "Hand With Reflecting Sphere"

Escher was a 20th century Dutch graphic artist recognized for his unique interpretation of repeating patterns (tessellations), impossible architecture, and skills in woodcutting and lithography.

Although lacking formal training in math or science, he was greatly appreciated by mathematicians, scientists, and crystallographers for his intuitive capacity for transforming geometric shape into a workable and adapting scheme. He became fascinated by the regular Division of the Plane when he visited Alhambra, a 14th-century Moorish castle in Granada, Spain in 1922. Later he would extend his passion from paper to carved beech wood spheres.

M.C. Escher's mind-bending prints and drawings playfully explore perspective, mirror images and physical space. Two of his best-known prints, Relativity (1953) and Ascending and Descending (1960), feature staircases which seem to defy gravity and run in impossible directions. His most popular work may be Hand With Reflecting Sphere (1935), an image of himself as seen in a globe held in his outstretched hand.

Escher also is known for his tessellations -- mosaics of repetitive designs in which positive and negative images interconnect and sometimes blend into one another. Though Escher was not trained in maths, his work has been embraced by mathematicians who see his drawings as artistic depictions of geometric principles.

      Biog. II

In between Romanticism and Impressionism this self-willed Frenchman created some of the most famous pieces known in the art of sculpting.

He was very talented at conveying feeling in his compositions by emphasizing gesture. Also, his rough surface texture with deep hollows added strong shadows and naturalism to the human form. Rodin's goal, as he put it, was "to render inner feelings through muscular movement." He achieved this aim by joining his profound knowledge of anatomy and movement with special attention to the body's surfaces, saying, "The sculptor must learn to reproduce the surface, which means all that vibrates on the surface, soul, love, passion, life...Sculpture is thus the art of hollows and mounds, not of smoothness, or even polished planes."

Labyrinths of the imagination Imaginary worlds, impossible stairways, paradoxical hallways, enigmatic patterns, and mind-boggling graphics are the trademarks of M.C. Escherís artwork. His two-dimensional drawings bring to life a fourth dimension where the surfaces of things come together like a Mobius strip. The profoundly original work of Escher has inspired countless artists, designers, and filmmakers and can be considered a genre in itself. This guide provides a mind-bending introduction to the great masterís work.
