A COMEDIE
In 1978, the BBC set itself the task of filming all of William Shakespeare’s plays for television.
The resulting productions, renowned for their loyalty to the text, utilised the best theatrical
and television directors and brought great performances from leading contemporary actors.
“O, what a world of vile ill-favour’d faults
Looks handsome in three hundred pounds a year.”
Among the honest folk of Windsor, Sir John Falstaff
stands out as a rogue, a chancer and an oaf. More concerned with his lack of money,
the ageing, overweight Falstaff hatches a plan to court
two wealthy married women, Mistress Ford and Mistress Page. When the two wives get
together they devise their own plan to teach the knight a lesson . . .
Shakespeare’s boisterous comedy of love and money
was supposedly written because Queen Elizabeth
wanted to see Falstaff in love. One of the great Shakespearian
characters, Falstaff, played here
with great gusto by Richard Griffiths, is mercilessly taunted by
Judy Davis and
Prunella Scales as the wives.

Enter Justice Shallow, Master Slender, and Sir Hugh Evans . . . .
SHALLOW : ”Sir Hugh, persuade me not.
I will make a Star Chamber matter of it.
If he were twenty Sir John Falstaffs,
he shall not abuse Robert Shallow, esquire . . . ”

The
Merry Wives
Of Windsor
ABOUT THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR
A truly domestic play, confronting middle-class dilemmas. The Merry Wives Of Windsor
is set dancing by a wicked sense of fun when the 'merry wives' receive Falstaff’s,
romantic overtures and resolve to trick him with all their female weaponry.
Brilliant comedy emerges from this complex Elizabethan farce as we,
the only possessors of all the facts, watch an impressive line-up of
artists bring strong and witty performances to the colourful, eccentric
personalities in one of Shakespeare’s best-loved comedies . . .
A legend dating from 1702 claims that Shakespeare
wrote The Merry Wives of Windsor in fourteen days and
by command of Queen Elizabeth; in 1597 she was said to have wished
particularly to see Falstaff in love. Whether or not this is true,
passage towards the end of the play alluding directly to the ceremonies
of the Order of the Garter, Britain’s highest order of chivalry,
encourages the belief that the play has a direct connection with a specific occasion.
In 1597 George Carey, Lord Hunsdon, Lord Chamberlain
and patron
of Shakespeare’s company was installed at Windsor as a Knight of the Garter . . .
First printed in a corrupt version in 1602 with a better text appearing in the 1623 Folio.
