Morris Hirshfield ~ Short Biography

Known as: Naïve (modern primitive) artist
Born: 1872, Poland (part formerly belonging to Russia)
Died: 1946, New York

Morris Hirschfield is one of those artists who is largely forgotten today and any meaningful info. on his life other than the bare facts listed below are hard to find. Best to catch a biography on him and I have sourced one below but even that is hard to find in stock - that's how hard to find anything about his life in depth especially on the first 65 years of his life. April 2016: Sourced Morris Hirshfield 1872-1946: American Primitive Painter which, along with other Naive painters, is a decent source of info. on the artist with a glorios plate of his Tiger painting (1940).

He emigrated to America in 1890. He worked in a ladies fashion house, became known for painting naked women, and, perhaps, worringly, could paint with great precision ladies' underwear and shoes. Whatever his fetishists, he was undoubtedly a great artist.

He left no more than 70 paintings.

His preliminary sketches were modeled on the large patterns used by tailors. His textures, which he carefully groomed with combs, were those of furs and fabrics. His formal devices are almost strictly two dimensional, with only vague spatial references.
