Naomi Watts was born in Shoreham, West Sussex. Her father Peter was Pink Floyd's sound engineer but died when she was seven.
At 14, her mother took her to Australia, where she met Nicole Kidman who was to become her best friend when they auditioned for a bikini commercial.
Naomi and Nicole appeared together in the 1991 film Flirting. But while Nicole went on to Hollywood superstardom, Naomi remained relatively unknown until David Lynch cast her as the star of Mulholland Drive.
She was paid £3million for the 2005 movie King Kong. The director, Peter Jackson, cast her as he thought she looked like a modern Fay Wray, the star of the 1933 original movie.
