This was done using oil on canvas. It is one of several paintings that Dali believed were premonitions of war (another was The Burning Giraffe (1936 - 37)). He described the work as prophetic because of Nostradamus's words that the manifestation of monsters meant that war would shortly follow. . Clear, concise, great repros of the key works, it's a joy because it is written in an understandable way. By that I mean you actually learn about how the works came into being and not a critic's pretentious examination of a work which just gives his or her's subjective viewpoint. I learnt more from this book on Dali's work than any other book I have found.
