The subject of this masterpiece, Marie Therese Walther, was Picasso's latest love. She hanged herself in 1977. Picasso met her in 1927. A statuesque blonde he was 46 and she 17. Their affair remained a secret for several years: Marie Therese hardly figured in Picasso's work which is quite extraordinary when you consider how autobiographical his work normally was. By 1932 the secret was out, and this painting is one of several in which the artist celebrated her youth and loveliness. Here, Marie Therese contemplates her image in a long mirror.

In legend and folk tale the mirror often shows more than a faithful reversed image of the gazer, and the difference between the two images of the girl in this picture is striking; it suggests among other things that the mirror image is Marie Therese's dark side or Freudian unconscious. It's such a clever and dark picture you cannot help gaze at the two Marie Thereses and the differences between them...A more detailed description & text in the book: Life and Works of Picasso
