Classical tradition dictates a pastoral, Mediterranean world of simple, sunlit pleasures and amorous shepherds and shepherdesses.Likewise its music is that of the pan pipes. When people grow tired or jaded of modern life, the rat race, city living etc., then they invariably turn to an ideal vision of simpler life they somehow think it can be found in an idyllic countryside. Whether they are right or wrong is not the point: a return to simple, classical primitivism is what alot of people yearn for at some point in their lives. European classical primitivism has always been alot gentler than non-European cultures.

This masterwork (in a canon of masterworks) captures that European classicism perfectly. Poetic simplicity, purity of line and all that. It is also brought up to date as the figures are no longer shepherds but young men in bathing trunks. Modern touches are a stark horizion between sea and sky as schematically and the rectangular blocks which form the rest of the background. It is a kind of theatre scene with the natural surroundings acting as a simplified backdrop.

This is a painting of the greatest calmness and greatest silence. Look at it, feel it, really see it. You are there, by the seaside, as serene as the blue sky and even more blue sea...A more detailed description & text in the book: Life and Works of Picasso
