It is interesting to note that by the 1930s, there was no artistic programme like Cubism that Picasso felt a need to subscibe to. he would distort the human figure and objects at will and not as part of a movement. Metamorphosis was characteristic of his work from the 1920s onwards. The canvases were populated by monsters ... and women.

There was a violent undercurrent pervading these works but this The Sculptor, was much more playful. What was usual here is the motif of the artist at work or contemplating his work, alone or with his model, a model who would also act as his lover. There is no model - but the curving contours suggest an eroticism . The sculptor's countenance integrating profile and full face became one of Picasso's hallmarks.
