The Blue Period was over. Picasso had faced dire poverty but by this time his works were beginning to sell. In his personal life he was happy with Fernande Olivier (Madeleine had been and gone) and he was at the centre of 'bohemian' life with a group of writers which included Max Jacob, the incomparable Guillaume Apollinaire and Alfred Jarry. 'Blue' seemed to have almost disappeared from the platte and in its place were pinks and ochres. it was gentler but still contained the melancholic feel of the earlier Period.

His subjects were invariably now the clowns and acrobats he saw several times a week at the Medrano Circus in Paris. Rather than focussing on their professional skills he depicted their rootless existence and seems to have been fascinated by their rather incongruous domesticity.

This picture does depict an acrobatic feat but what captures you is is the brooding and hugeness on the man in the foreground. it has that uneasy quality you find in 'huge men' from some major artists from the last 50 years or so. But here it is, over 100 years ago.

All is not as it seems.
