A wonderful and charming piece by Sunderland-based artist Pete Dimmock. He is an artist who belongs to that currently flourishing British School of Northern Art. That, by the way, is my description. Who qualifies to be in it? In my book, the artist has to be influenced to some degree by Lowry but brings his/her own vision to the table. They have to come from the North whether that is the centre of it all, Manchester or Sunderland (which Lowry knew well) or, indeed anywhere from around Manchester and upwards. In other words to paint in the Northern style they have to fully appreciate and absorb all their surroundings. Sounds pretentious but I'm sure you know what I mean.
The Godfather of this movement for me is currently James Downie. His deserved popularity over the last year or so have pushed his prices ever upwards. So I have looked around for emerging artists and Pete Dimmock is one of them. As of August 2011 it is the best time to catch his work as his prices are relatively much lower so could be a very sound investment. Plus the work would look beautiful on any wall (always the most important thing)!
He has been painting since 2003. He's already achieved great success and has recently exhibited his work in both Edinburgh and Sunderland. Oer the last few years he has exhibited regularly. Many have commented on the similarities to Lowry's work but what I love about Dimmock's work is that it is his style, his vision. A charming innocence of how life was or could be.
Watercolour is usually what he works with. You will notice that his works feature his little black dog, Charlie, named after his father who was a coal miner.
