      A HISTORICAL TRAGEDIE

In 1978, the BBC set itself the task of filming all of William Shakespeareís plays for television. The resulting productions, renowned for their loyalty to the text, utilised the best theatrical and television directors and brought great performances from leading contemporary actors.

ďAnd therefore, since I cannot prove a lover,
To entertain these fair well-spoken days,
I am determined to prove a villain
And hate the idle pleasures of these daysĒ

Richard, the younger brother of the King of England is hell-bent on seizing control of the crown and so embarks on a murderous rampage, which, once started, cannot easily be stopped.

This BBC production is the most faithful adaptation of Shakespeareís study of evil, with only minor edits made to the full text. Ron Cookís powerfully understated, soft-spoken performance stands in direct contrast to the many forthright movie interpretations of the Bardís greatest villain.

      ABOUT RICHARD III

Edward IV is on the throne, but his brother plots to become King himself, murdering those who stand between him and the crown. He woos and wins Lady Anne, the widow of Henry VI's son, as his wife. Queen Margaret, widow of Henry VI, returns from France and curses him. Richard engineers the murder of his brother Clarence. Overwhelmed by Clarence's death Edward dies and Richard lodges Edward's two young sons in the Tower. Richard has Rivers, Grey and Hastings executed. The Duke of Buckingham persuades the Lord Mayor and the citizens of London to urge Richard to accept the throne. The Princes in the Tower are also murdered. Buckingham revolts and raises an army against Richard. At the battle of Bosworth Richard is defeated by Henry, Earl of Richmond, who claims the crown as Henry VII and marries Edward IV's daughter, thus uniting the Houses of Lancaster and York in the new dynasty of the Tudors.

Shakespeareís play about Richard Crookback, his seizure of the throne of England and his ultimate defeat upon Bosworth Field . . . There is no record of the first performance of Richard III (probably in late 1592 or early 1593. outside London); it was printed in 1597, with five reprints before its inclusion in the 1623 Folio.
