Stanhope Alexander Forbes R.A is remembered today for being a member of the Newlyn school of painters.
He studied art at the Lambeth School of Art from 1874 to 1876, and from 1876 to 1878 attended Royal Academy schools. Thereafter, he was in Paris n the studio of Léon Bonnat. He moved to Newlyn in Cornwall in 1884, which was to be his home for the rest of his life.
The French Realist painter Jules Bastien-Lepage was a great influence on his work.
His work is represented in the Tate in London, Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, and the Ipswich Museums.
Married the Canadian painter Elizabeth Adela Armstrong.
Co-founded the New English Art Club in 1886.
Elected A.R.A. in 1892 and R.A. in 1910.
