      • Mr Polly (Sir John Mills) is a sensitive soul. Sacked from his job for daydreaming he despairs of ever finding another job when his father’s death suddenly brings him a large inheritance, and with it he embarks on a cycling adventure. Along his travels he meets and falls desperately in love with a young girl, but the relationship turns sour when her friends hear of it. Spurned, he hastily marries his cousin, Miriam (Betty Ann Davies The Belles of St. Trinians), and settles in a sleepy town where he opens a draper’s shop. But his beliefs are eroded when fifteen years on bad debt and his floundering marriage bring him to a personal crossroads where he must make some major decisions.

Screen legend and Academy award-winner John Mills (Ice Cold in Alex, Ryan's Daughter) both stars in and produces this tale of despair and hope from the fertile mind of one of the greatest British writers of nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Scripted and directed by Anthony Pelissier, this refreshing and charming film also features a sumptuous score by William Alwyn (Odd Man Out, The Fallen Idol).
