      • Experience one of the most powerful and memorable period dramas in the history of cinema. This British movie classic has never been available on DVD before in the UK and the version presented here is the full-length theatrical version (not the alternate version which is half an hour shorter).

It’s Regency London and stunning debutante, Clarissa Richmond (Phyllis Calvert – Mandy, Root of All Evil), has promised to marry the wealthy yet sadistic Marquis of Rohan (James Mason (Odd Man Out, North by Northwest). But he does not love her – all he wants is an heir to his title - an ambition which is fulfilled when she presents him with a son. After a chance meeting, Clarissa entrusts school friend Hesther (Margaret Lockwood – The Wicked Lady) as governess to her child. But Hesther repays Clarissa’s kindness by becoming Rohan's mistress, and schemes to become his wife by encouraging Clarissa's friendship with dashing actor Rokeby (Stewart Granger – Scaramouche, King Solomon’s Mines). Just what lengths will Hesther go to achieve her ends and will Clarissa realise her ‘friend’s’ sinister plotting before it is too late?

Shot in 1943, this tale about family, friendship, love and honour based on Eleanor Smith’s novel was directed by Leslie Arliss (The Wicked Lady) and would make big stars of Mason, Lockwood and Granger in arguably their most memorable film.

        Special features:
