      A COMEDIE

      In 1978, the BBC set itself the task of filming all of William Shakespeare’s plays for television. The resulting productions, renowned for their loyalty to the text, utilised the best theatrical and television directors and brought great performances from leading contemporary actors.

      “If music be the food of love, play on;
      Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting,
      The appetite may sicken and so die.”

      Viola and Sebastion are identical twins, separated by a shipwrecked. Landing in Illyria, Viola disguises herself as her brother and goes into the service of the Duke Orsino. When the Duke sends her to help him woo the Lady Olivia, the obstacles of unrequited love, self-deceit and mistaken identify soon lead an assortment of lovers on a merry dance.

      Perhaps the most popular of Shakespeare’s comedies Twelfth Night considers the nature of love; true love, self-love and friendship. This star filled production won great acclaim for its energy and for its inclusion of the plays often overlooked darker elements.

      ABOUT TWELFTH NIGHT

      Twelfth Night is one of Shakespeare’s best-loved comedies . . . Performed traditionally at the end of the Christmas season, a time of revelry and topsy-turvydom; Shakespeare’s title, a play in which a servant aspires to his mistress’s hand has no more specific reference but has been thought appropriate to the festive occasion of Candlemass (2nd February 1602) when the first known allusion to it, made by John Manningham, a law student of the Middle Temple noted “at our feast we had play called Twelfth Night or What You Will . . . The tale begins when a brother and sister are separated in a shipwreck but survive to be washed up on the shores of Illyria .

      This version is a mad extravaganza of disguise and ambiguity set in the days of Cavaliers and Roundheads the lively production handles the humorous and complex plot with great agility . . .
