Painter
- Balthus (Balthasar Klossowski de Rola) was a French painter, the son of
a Polish painter and writer. He lived mainly in Paris, but was frequently in
Geneva. He was encouraged by Derain and Bonnard, and his early works were
mainly street scenes and interiors influenced by the artists who first encouraged
him, and painted in heavy earthy colours. He then concentrated on portraits
and figure paintings. In 1961 he became Director of the French Academy in
Rome, and his later, post-Rome, works were more consciously poetic and
colourful with distinctly erotic overtones of Jeunes filles en fleur. He remained
outside involvement with all modern art movements, content to work within his
personal vision and style, despite friendships with Picasso, Braque, ,
Miro, and other artists.
There are works in Chicago, Minneapolis, New York
(Met. Mus.) and Paris (Mus. d'Art Mod.).
