March John Lennon with Pete Shotton forms the group The Black Jacks . The Black Jacks become The Quarrymen a week after forming and the bandperforms what's known in England as skiffle. July 6 The Quarry Men perform at St. Peter's Church Garden Fete. John and Paul meet, introduced by Ivan Vaughan and the pair find out that they have similar pop idol interests:"Paul, what kind of music do you like?" asked John. "Well I used to likeLonnie Donnegan but now that skiffle is fading out I love the music of Elvis Presley, Eddie Cochrane, Gene Vincent, Little Richard..." "Hey," John interrupted, "they're all the people I'm into." July 12 John invites Paul to join The Quarrymen. 
August 7 The debut at Cavern Club, without Paul, where the audience gives them a hard time for their for performing rock numbers such as Hound Dog and Blue Suede Shoes. The Cavern is located in Liverpool's market district. September John Lennon commences studies at the Liverpool College of Art. October 18 Evening performance of the Quarrymen in a ball held by the Conservative Club, at the New Clubmoor Hall, Broadway, Liverpool. Paul's debut. Paul plays for John a couple of tunes he had composed, one of them being I Lost My Little Girl.

July 15 Julia Lennon, John's mother, is fatally struck down by a car driven by anoff-duty drunken policeofficer. When the trial ends, the officer was acquitted of the offence. 
-------------------------------------------------------------- 1959AugustRingo Starr begins drumming for Rory Storm and theHurricanes. Ringo would be Rory's drummer right up until August 18, 1962. August 29th Opening night of the Mona Best's Casbah Coffee Club in West Derby. Show by the Quarrymen (John, Paul, George, Ken Brown). The group continues to play there each Saturday well into October. Sometimes, with name The Rainbows. The group know Mona' son, Pete Best, a drummer with a group called The Blackjacks. The new entry, Ken Brown, performs on bass with John, Paul and George for very short time here. October 10th Ken Brown quits the Quarrymen. October 31 Quarry Men audition for Carrol Levis show in Liverpool. During this audition period,the band would change its name from Quarry Men to Johnny and the Moondogs by November 15. 
November 15th Manchester. Regional finals of a competition to appear on TV's Star Search. The Beatles find the last bus back to Liverpool leaves before curtain call and return dejected.

April 23rd John and Paul perform as a duet at Caversham, Berkshire, calling themselves the Nerk Twins. May John asks Allan Williams to manage The Moondogs. The group play at Williams' Jacaranda Coffee Bar. May 10th Audition for Larry Parnes. This time the drummer is Tommy Moore, but he arrives late for the audition, and for this reason Johnny Hutchinson is used, lent from Cassanovas. May 20th Contract with Paramount Enterprises, to play the Grosvenor Ballroom, Wallasey. -- Start of tour of Scotland as backup band for Johnny Gentle . May 23rd Johnny Gentle crashes the van carrying himself and the Beatles. Tommy Moore is hit in the mouth by a guitar. May 25th The Cavern changes style and opens its doors to rock'n'roll groups. June 6th Performance at the Grosvenor Ballroom, Wallasey, with Gerry and the Pacemakers. 
June 13th Tommy Moore's last performance on drums at Jacaranda. June 16th Performance at the Neston Institute, Hinderton Road, Neston, Wirral, Cheshire. June 16th - July 30th Perform at Neston Istitute and Grosvenor Ballroom. The Silver Beetles employ Norman Chapman, as their drummer. August 6th The Beatles visit the Casbah Coffee Club, seeing Pete Best perform with the Blackjacks. August 16th Leave Liverpool for Hamburg. August 17th Arrive in Hamburg. Evening: first performance at the Indra Club. 
August 19th The Beatles are hired to perform 2 additional months at the Indra Club. December 5th The Beatles luck in Hamburg runs out: Harrison is deported for being underage for working in a night club; McCartney & Pete Best are arrested for pinning a condom to abrick wall and then igniting it. The two are told to leave Germany. The band returns home, discouraged. December 24th Concert at the Grosvenor Ballroom, Wallasey. December 27th Perform at the Litherland Town Hall, Liverpool.

April 24th Brian arrives in Hamburg to attend a course in record retailing management, run by Deutsche Grammophon. June 15th - 21st Perform at the Top Ten Club, Hamburg. June 22nd & 23rd On this date, Tony Sheridan and The Beatles do first session recordings for Bert Kaempfert with the following songs: My Bonnie (Lies Over the Ocean), The Saints (When the Saints Go Marching In), Why, Cry For a Shadow, Ain't She Sweet, Take Out Some Insurance On Me Baby, and Nobody's Child". The German Polydor single, My Bonnie b/w When the Saints Go Marching In is released in August 1961 listed as Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers [Polydor / 24 673] which became a big top-ten hit for Sheridan in Germany. The UK release of the single was issued January 5, 1962 and listed as Tony Sheridan and The Beatles [Polydor NH 66-833]. Polydor then later decided to release a Tony Sheridan album aptly entitled My Bonnie in June of 1962 as Polydor LPHM 46-612 [mono] and Polydor SLPHM 237-112 [stereo]. The band's line-up for the album consisted for the most part of Tony Sheridan, Pete Best, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and featured pianist Roy Young on Sweet Georgia Brown.
