Biography:

What a wonderful actor! Bernard James Miles brought a touch of class in all the films he appeared in. Warm, sincere, someone you could identify with, his highlight performance came as Chief Petty Officer Walter Harvey in David Lean's 1942 War Classic In Which We Serve.

He was on stage from 1930 and in films from 1933 with Channel Crossing (with Max Miller, Constance Cummings and Edmund Gwenn), he became known for his comical portrayal of rustics (most notably in The Tawny Pipit, which he also produced, co-wrote and co-directed), as well as for founding The Mermaid Theatre in 1959. In the late Thirties and early Forties, he became an able support in a handful of films, among them Four Feathers, Hitchcock's Jamaica Inn and One of Our Aircfraft Is Missing.

He was married to the actress Josephine Wilson, his co-star in the 1950 film Chance of a Lifetime, and who co-founded with her husband The Mermaid Theatre, until her death in 1990. Less than a year later he was also dead.

He was knighted in 1969 and made a Life Peer in 1979.
