2021: My master printer has retired sadly so these prints will never be available again. Such a shame as they were exquisite little prints but the printer gave me no warning of his retirement so I couldn't persuade him to continue or find a way of taking over the printing. The result is these prints are no more. I'm a little sad as I really believed in the quality of these prints but such is life.

MONET TRIVIA & FREE PRINT ~ WATER LILIES
    1906 - 07

Monet was scathing about the critics he dubbed the 'enemies of blue and pink'.

He painted this combination of colours again and again: coral - tinted haystacks against a cerulean sky; pink lilies floating in clear blue water.

Here, his painting comes close to abstraction. There are no banks, no bridge: the entire canvas is given over to the surface of the lily pond.

The surface is like silk embroidery: indeed, Monet's water lily paintings were turned into tapestries by the historic Gobelins factory in Paris. Monet's seemingly natural scenes are often nothing of the sort. He was willing to interfere to improve nature, to make it more 'painterly'.

Once, when painting a bare - branched tree near the Creuse River, he was dismayed when it came into leaf before he had finished and hired two workmen to remove the buds.

He had a gardener at Giverny to fend off the water rats that ate his bulbs and to cultivate and titivate the lilies themselves.
