He painted this combination of colours again and again: coral - tinted haystacks against a cerulean sky; pink lilies floating in clear blue water. Here, his painting comes close to abstraction. There are no banks, no bridge: the entire canvas is given over to the surface of the lily pond. The surface is like silk embroidery: indeed, Monet's water lily paintings were turned into tapestries by the historic Gobelins factory in Paris. Monet's seemingly natural scenes are often nothing of the sort. He was willing to interfere to improve nature, to make it more 'painterly'. Once, when painting a bare - branched tree near the Creuse River, he was dismayed when it came into leaf before he had finished and hired two workmen to remove the buds. He had a gardener at Giverny to fend off the water rats that ate his bulbs and to cultivate and titivate the lilies themselves.
