David Bowie - Lodger Cassette. The last in the so-called 'Berlin Trilogy' (what was actually recorded in Berlin?), it is, to me, the weakest of the three. But it's well worth getting and if you want to hear it how many heard it back in the day then get it on cassette rather than the boring and vastly overpriced remastered vinyl. What's the point? Cassettes are truly vintage and despite their shortcomings, or rather because of, take you back to the days when almost everyone preferred cassettes. And this has been play tested - so, so important with used cassettes.

Originally released in 1979, Lodger completed the sequence of albums commonly associated with David Bowie’s late-1970s Berlin period, although much of the recording itself took place outside Berlin. The album continued Bowie’s collaboration with Brian Eno, combining experimental production ideas with more accessible song structures and a broader range of international musical influences. Compared with the more atmospheric and abstract character of Low and "Heroes", Lodger places greater emphasis on rhythm, travel-inspired themes, and fragmented pop constructions. The album incorporates elements of art rock, world music influences, and unconventional recording techniques while still maintaining a comparatively direct vocal and melodic approach. Tracks such as Boys Keep Swinging, DJ, and Look Back In Anger illustrate Bowie’s continued interest in identity, performance, and stylistic reinvention during the closing years of the 1970s. The record occupies a distinctive position within Bowie’s catalogue, balancing experimentation with a more restless and kinetic musical energy. This 1984 German cassette reissue reflects the continued demand for Bowie’s RCA-era catalogue during the expansion of the European prerecorded cassette market in the early 1980s. Reissue editions such as this introduced earlier Bowie albums to a growing cassette audience at a time when tape formats had become a dominant commercial medium. For collectors, German cassette editions of Lodger remain notable for their manufacturing variations and European market presentation, preserving a format closely associated with Bowie’s transitional late-1970s work.
