This is the beautiful, poetic and romantic interlude from the throbbing, drumbeat journey that is 1. Outside. Don't get me wrong - it's a great album, the Berlin trilogy rolled into one for the 1990s but it's a descent into a powerful Hell with William Blake on main vocals and Samuel Beckett beating the drum. It's that deep; it's that powerful.

The CD singles from the 1995 album, 1. Outside, are an interesting one. I've long thought that the album was one of the most underrated of all time. With Brian Eno returning as producer after all those years, it's spellbindingly dark and yet the critics have sniffed at it ever since. Absurd and you wonder if they have actually listened to it. It's Bowie's latter masterpiece, a kind of 90s equivalent to Low and 'Heroes', or, the middle between the aforementioned titles and The Next Day and Blackstar.

Since his death, the CD singles lifted from the album have really gone up in value. You only have to check the exquisite CD sinle Strangers When We Meet @ ebay.co.uk to know what I mean. Why is that? CD singles from subsrquent albums have also gone up but the Outside singles have really gone up.

I think this is due to a wider public discovering this album, realising just how astonishing it is, and trying to get every last drop from it through the CD singles. Also, alot of the great Bowie singles came out before CD singles were readily available so you are really talking about releases from the late 1980s onwards. Most or alot of Bowie fans would agree that Bowie in the late 80s has never really been collectable.

At the time of their release in the UK, they did enjoy some chart success but it wasn't massive. it was kind of eclipsed by all that Cool Britannia rubbish that has long since beeb forgotten. Oasis, Blur, Pulp or Bowie - which do you think has aged the best.

Of course it is Bowie and the releases from Outside just get better with every listen. So, at last, the album and its singles are being found by a wider audience.

Baal Petition

David Bowie on Mime:

"Lindsay Kemp taught me mime. The trouble with mime is that there is a standard routine of set pieces which everybody has a go at, and do their own variations.

"As a technician, Marceau's absolutely brilliant. I don't think that what he has to say is very revelant, but the majority of the audiences that go to see him go to see the technique, the actual balletic motion, and the physical control of the man, which s quite remarkable.

"He is very meticulous about detail, which is something I've tried to emulate as much as possible, but I'm not a meticulous person. I've just realised the importance of mime to create an environment." (1973)
