Manafon
David Sylvian, 2010
While stocks last I will send 4 Sylvian cards out with each order.
Manafon is an album I know I will grow to like but just haven't quite got there yet. After many listens I'm slowly getting there. But don't let that put you off - it says more of my limitations as a listener rather than the music itself.
Needless to say, anything Sylvian puts out these days is never going to be easy. Long since a music maverick, he never promised a safe journey and in that respect he doesn't disappoint here. As befits the sister piece to the 2004 Blemish release it's incompromising stuff.
I won't bore you with more. There are a host of reviews at amazon.co.uk (click here
for them and scroll down the page) which describe the piece far better than I can. Not all are favourable but that is the power of Sylvian - there is nothing in-between.
This is the standard audio CD released in a 6 panel digipak. It features artwork by Ruud Van Empel with art direction by the man himself, David Sylvian. Designed by Samadhi's resident designer Chris Bigg of v23 fame. Beautifully packaged - the green foliage is just haunting.
But then all of Sylvian's solo work has been better packaged than any other artist I know.
While 2003's Blemish startled long-time fans with its emotional rigour, Sylvian
has taken the next step with his first solo album in 6 years. During sessions in London, Vienna, and Tokyo, Sylvian
assembled the world's leading improvisers and innovators, artists who explore free improvisation, space-specific performance, and live electronics. From Evan Parker and Keith Rowe, to Fennesz and members of Polwechsel, to Sachiko M
and OtomoYoshihide, the musicians provide both a backdrop and a counterweight to his own vocal performances – which, minus one instrumental, are nakedly the center of each piece. Intuition drew Sylvian to these pieces and these players, and the surprises they bring: a cello visiting like a warm hand on a forehead, the unpredictable use of unadulterated sine waves, the brassy path of Evan Parker's soprano sax solo.
Manafon has a forbidding core, but aesthetically, each piece is an engrossing discovery.
