Shimmeringly photographed by Gerry Fisher, Oxford and its surrounding countryside have never looked as beautiful as in this delicious exercisein character assassination. Dirk Bogarde and Stanley Baker seize upon every opportunity presented in Harold Pinter's merciless script, in which donnish civility only thinly veils the disappointment, lust and cruelty of unfulfilled middle-age.Michael York, Delphine Seyrig and Vivien Merchant also give impeccable performances as those unfortunate enough to be caught up in Bogarde and Baker's mind games. Preying on their weaknesses, Joseph Losey's relentless direction leaves the characters with few hiding places, particularly during thesquirmingly uncomfortable Sundaysupper. Quite brilliant. - Advertise Here

UK Release: 07/01/08 Catalogue Number: OPTD0932 Certificate: PG Running Time:105 mins approx Dirk Bogarde,Jacqueline Sassard Joseph Losey Steven (Dirk Bogarde, Victim, The Damned) is a professor at Oxford University. Stifled by his life of marriage and academia, he finds himself drawn to Anna (Jacqueline Sassard) a beautiful young student who is already engaged to William (Michael York, Cabaret) another of Steven’s students. A shifting love triangle ensues, which seems destined to end in tragedy. Directed by Joseph Losey whilst in exile in Britain after being black-listed in Hollywood by the House of Un-American Activities Committee, Accident is one of three film collaborations with the legendary playwright Harold Pinter (along with The Go-Between and The Servant). Often acknowledged as the pinnacle of Losey’s distinguished career, the film is beautifully shot and features a complex and mesmerising central performance from Dirk Bogarde as the tormented Steven. Winner of the 1967 Grand Jury Prize at Cannes, Accident is a compelling and unforgettable masterpiece.
