Biography

"More than her art, Dorothea Tanning is most famous today for being the fourth wife of one of the gods of Surrealism, Max Ernst. It's a shame for her work is so worth discovering and stands up for itself in its own right. The figures from the 1940s are little short of breathtaking."

Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012) was an American painter, printmaker, sculptor, and writer who became one of the last living members of the Surrealist movement. She lived to the remarkable age of 101, creating extraordinary art for over seven decades.

Early Life & Artistic Formation

Born August 25, 1910, in Galesburg, Illinois, Tanning studied briefly at the Art Institute of Chicago School in 1930. She then moved to New York City where she spent her time studying art in galleries and museums, absorbing the revolutionary ideas that would shape her unique vision.

Meeting Max Ernst

Tanning met Max Ernst when she was in her early 30s at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York, where many of the Surrealists were exiled during World War II. At the time, Ernst was married to Peggy Guggenheim. Through Ernst, Tanning came to know all the leading lights of the Surrealist movement.

They married in 1946, and the famous photograph of Tanning and Ernst in Arizona has become iconic. Together they lived in Paris for nearly 30 years, immersed in the creative ferment of post-war European art.

Artistic Career

Tanning had her first one-woman exhibition at the Julien Levy Gallery in 1944. Her work was heavily influenced by both Surrealism and Impressionism, creating a unique style that was entirely her own.

Her most famous painting is probably Birthday, a self-portrait painted when she was 30 years old. The image is striking, haunting, and unforgettable—showing Tanning as a beautiful, enigmatic figure in a surreal domestic interior.

Later Years & Legacy

Tanning eventually returned to the United States and resided in New York City, where she continued to work across multiple media—painting, sculpture, and writing poetry and fiction.

She died on January 31, 2012, at her Manhattan home at the age of 101. She was one of the last surviving members of the original Surrealist movement, carrying the torch of that revolutionary artistic vision into the 21st century.

Her work deserves to be celebrated in its own right—not merely as the wife of Max Ernst, but as one of the great female surrealist artists whose vision was as powerful and original as any of her male contemporaries.
