      • Dr Thomas Monro was a London physician and amateur draughtsman who befriended or patronized many artists, including Turner and Girtin, De Wint. J.R. Cozens, and Cotman. According to Farington (Diary, 1794 and 1798) Turner and Girtin were employed by Dr Monro to draw at his house in the evenings, and in the winter evenings his house was like an academy, being full of young painters whom he encouraged to use it as a studio.

Some of his own drawings are in London (V&A, Courtauld Inst.).
