The quintessential living a boy's adventure tale. A cold adventure I grant you but the ultimate us against the elements saga nonetheless. Astonishingly gripping read - it hooks you in at the start until the end of the book. Once you pick it up you can't put it down. I first read it in under 2 days flat as I came to it without really knowing about the Endurance expedition. I just couldn't believe what I was reading - how they could survive for that long and in those conditions - well, in its way, it's more remarkable than Amundsen reaching the South Pole first.

Shackleton comes out of it as a master leader of men but he's real, not some demi God, as he has flaws as the rest of us. But what a man; what a book.

The iconography of the Endurance expedition is owed a huge debt to the onboard photographer Frank Hurley. He made the photos of the boat into art and I for one have no problem with whatever he did to them, or doctored them, afterwards. Even Monet had to give nature a nudge in the right direction from time to time to make the higher art.
