Then, on the morning of one of their last few days together, Henrik makes a shallow dive and suffers fatal head and back injuries. Years later, Marie becomes a prima ballerina, but her success is dulled by the pain and devastation she still feels at the loss of her first true love. Soon, a new relationship and the discovery of an old diary will awaken old memories and force her to re-examine her past.
This lyrical study of the power of young love from master filmmaker Ingmar Bergman is a poetic evocation of the burden of memory and the power of loss.
This is the picture that established Bergman's international reputation. It contains the first intimations of the dramatic intensity and structural complexity that would characterise his more mature work. Maj-Britt Nilsson gives a performance of such sensitivity that one is at a loss to explain why Bergman dropped her from his stock company after Secrets of Women a couple of years later. Gunnar Fischer and Bengt Jammark's shimmering images of the sunny Swedish countryside further enhance this subtle, moving film.
