MOVIE REVIEW
Jack Hawkins, an actor who had been around for more than twenty years, became a star as a result of this film, playing the headmaster of a school for deaf children who becomes closely involved with the mother of an afflicted little girl. The film is moving without becoming mawkish, and excellently written.

Opened in the UK in July 1952.
It was one of Ealing's most moving films. It was the director Alexander Mackendrick's only non-comedy for the studio.
The school scenes were shot at the Royal Residential School for the Deaf in Manchester.

I'll start it off: even after all this time the film hasn't lost any of its power. I think that's because it is never sentimental - it doesn't use artifact to pull at the heartstings - instead it gives you what it actually like to be deaf. The directing and writing are superb. Calvert is good, Hawkins excellent and Mandy Miller as the afflicted little girl is uber brilliant. She holds the whole picture together like glue. She's the only one of the cast still about. I wonder what happened to her. She quickly gave up acting and the last I heard of her was she was married with children and living somewhere in rural Scotland.
