MOVIE REVIEW

A trendy furniture designer, tired of his employer's lack of appreciation, decides to emigrate to Australia, to the chagrin of his family. After much angst all round he changes his mind. There are a good few moments from the director of Genevieve.

The star of the movie isn't Hawkins but the black cat. Superb performance, plays the black cat better than a ginger or tuxedo cat would. His sensitivity to such a drastic event as emigration to the other side of the world is captured perfectly when he disappears. Pitch purrfect.

The Technicolor photography by Douglas Slocombe makes this corner of London dreamlike - a kind of paradise lost now with the inexorable onslaught of modern times. But did it ever exist? Like this? I guess only John Fraser now could tell us the answer.
