Hans Arp is known as one of the most innovative artists of 20th century art.
Born in Alsace, he studied in Paris where he met Ernst, Klee
and Kandinsky.
He exhibited in the second Blaue Reiter exhibition.
What he is most known for today came next. He was one of the co-founders of Dada in Zurich in 1916. When he later settled in France he became a Surrealist.
He opposed mechanical civilization and rationalism, he committed himself to the “meaningless”, which he expressed through his various works.
His wife, Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889-1943), was Swiss who collaborated with him. She was also associated with the Zurich Dada group. When she died he later married the collector Marguerite Hagenbach.

Trivia:
- When Arp was born the area was known as Alsace-Lorraine (or Elsass-Lothringen in German). This was during the brief period following the Franco-Prussian War after it had been returned to Germany by France. When Alsace was returned to France at the end of World War I, French law determined that his name become Jean.
- He began sculpting at the age of 44.
