- John Linnell
(1792-1882)
He painted miniatures, landscapes and Bible illustrations. He was disliked by many fellow-artists, and Constable is usually blamed for spreading the gossip about sharp practice in dealing which caused his constant rejection at RA elections. His son-in-law Palmer loathed him, and his one saving grace was the help he gave to Blake, whom he met in 1818. He commissioned engravings for Job (1823-5), and also suggested the idea of illustrating Dante.
His major biblical landscape Noah (RA, 1848) is in Cleveland Ohio, and there are other works by him in Brighton, Cambridge, Liverpool, London (BM, NPG, Tate, V&A, Guidhall), Manchester, Oxford, Preston and Yale (CBA).
