    1894

      Born on May 29 in Vienna. Grew up in Vienna and New York. Went to Hollywood in 1923. After a series of setbacks (films that were left unfinished,did not make it into theaters etc.).

    1925

      Debuted with The Salvation Hunters.

    1926

      Breakthrough with Underworld, a gangster film in which von Sternberg employed highly innovative lighting and camera work.

    1928

      The Last Command. This film earned Emil Jannings the first Oscar in cinema history for best actor.

    1930

      At Jannings' suggestion, von Sternberg directed the first Ufa sound movie in Germany, The Blue Angel. With his 'discovery', Marlene Dietrich, he made six further movies in the U.S.:

    1930

      Morocco.

    1931

      Dishonored.

    1932

      Shanghai Express.

    1934

      The Scarlet Empress.

    1935

      The Devil Is a Woman.
      Only a few more films followed, at relatively long intervals, including:

    1939

      Sergeant Madden.

    1941

      The Shanghai Gesture.

    1953

      After The Saga of Anatahan/Ana-Ta-Han, von Sternberg retired from the movie business.

    1969

      Josef Von Sternberg died in Hollywood.
