    The artist drew and painted a number of versions of this house which stood derelict in its surroundings. These are modified and extended quite arbitrarily


A later version, The Island 1942 intensifies the element of loneliness by isolating the house on an island of waste-land surrounded by a watery moat.

However interpreted, the subject is always a symbol of the artist's personal loneliness and a metaphor of universal mystery.
