The artist, who always had an eye for the ecentric and the extraordinary, recalled how he once saw this strange vehicle during his street wanderings:
"There was a man travelling slowly along in an extraordinary upright box on wheels. I followed it. I couldn't help it. And the man had the face of a poet. Suddenly he stopped and turned on me! 'What the bloody hell are you following me about for?' he asked. And followed the remark with plenty more similar language. I felt a fool!"
Nevertheless the idea took firm root in the artist's imagination, and the contraption was to appear from time to time, quite out of context, in a number of street scenes.
