I don't think there can be anything in-between - such is the nature of the piece. Certainly, it is the most important work in his oeuvre in the respect that it serves as a kind of crossroads with which the listener either decided to stay with him on his journey or give up. Some would rather have stayed with the poetic beauty of Secrets of the Beehive or Gone to Earth though with the latter and the ambient tracks there were signposts to say that nearly 20 years on this would be the path he would follow. Blemish, done in the midst of the split from his wife and leaving Virgin after 20+ years, is unsettling, sparse, disconnecting and just totally uncommercial. Think of it as his equivalent to Scott Walker's Tilt when you have been used to No Regrets and you get what its relation is to the past work. This was the journey he invited his listeners on and one that, to my ears, can be hard work but, equally, rewarding in a way few current musicians have attained.
