Perhaps the most under-rated of Fritz Lang's silent spectacles, this tale of
master criminality has all the visceral
thrill and visual atmospherics of one of
Louis Feuillade's Fantomas serials.
Many of the Metropolis
alumni were
reunited for the picture, with Karl
Vollbrecht and Otto Hunte creating
Expressionist sets which added
menace to the dastardly deeds laid at
the door of the Mabuse-like Rudolf
Klein-Rogge by Lang and Thea von
Harbou's breathless script. Lang
abandons political allegory to place the
emphasis firmly on escapism and his
genius for the awe-inspiring set piece.
